Smart glasses buying guide: features, fit and what to check
Compare camera, audio and display glasses, battery life, prescription options, phone compatibility and South African support before buying.

Editorial notice: This guide is independent editorial research, not a product recommendation or ranking. The links on this page are not affiliate links, and PowderedPurple does not earn commission from them. Some PowderedPurple product profiles it links to carry clearly disclosed paid links to the retailer.
How this guide is built: It explains what to compare from published product information. PowderedPurple has not physically tested the frames discussed here. Retailer listings can be incomplete or change; verify the exact item with the seller before purchase.
Start with the task you want to do
Write down the job you want the glasses to handle: calls during a walk, hands-free photos, an assistant, or a screen for travel and work. Then compare only models that support that job. A feature you will use every week is a better starting point than a long specification list.
This guide compares published manufacturer information. PowderedPurple has not worn, recorded with or battery-tested these products. The examples below explain the categories; they are not a ranking.
Understand the three different buying decisions
| What you want | What to look for | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Calls and audio | Speakers, microphones and usable controls. | Call clarity, audio leakage, comfort and phone compatibility. |
| Photos and an assistant | Camera, capture indicator, app and supported AI features. | Exact generation, regional features and capture transfer. |
| A wearable screen | A display designed for your viewing task. | Device video output, prescription solution and viewing comfort. |
Meta separates its camera-and-audio glasses from Meta Ray-Ban Display. XREAL One-series glasses take a different route: a connected spatial screen. Check the specific product’s feature list before assuming “smart glasses” includes a display, camera or the same assistant. Meta overview; Display FAQ; XREAL connection guide.
Compare the exact model and generation
Save the full model name, generation, frame size and lens option from the listing. Similar-looking frames can carry different hardware. Ask for the model code and a photograph of the product identification if the listing is unclear.
| Example | Manufacturer battery wording | Buying question |
|---|---|---|
| Ray-Ban Meta Gen 1 | Up to 4 hours for moderate use. | Which generation is this listing? |
| Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 | Up to 8 hours for moderate use. | Will your recording and audio routine fit the charge? |
| Ray-Ban Meta Blayzer / Scriber Optics | Over 8 hours. | Which prescription and fitting options are offered? |
| Oakley Meta HSTN | Up to 8 hours of typical use. | How comfortable is the frame for your routine? |
| Oakley Meta Vanguard | Up to 9 hours of typical use. | Are the sport features and fit useful to you? |
These figures describe different manufacturer usage scenarios. They are not an independent comparison or a promise of continuous recording time. Check the current specification for the exact item. Sources: Ray-Ban FAQ and Oakley FAQ, checked 29 September 2026.
Check your phone, app and accounts first
Ray-Ban and Oakley Meta glasses use a smartphone, the Meta AI app and a Meta account. Confirm the current supported-phone list for your exact model. App availability, operating-system support and an individual AI feature’s availability are separate checks. Ray-Ban setup requirements; Oakley setup requirements.
For XREAL One-series display use, the manufacturer specifies a source that supports DisplayPort video output and supplies power; a USB-C socket alone does not establish compatibility. Ask about the exact phone, laptop or console and any adapter you would need. XREAL device connections.
For South African buyers: separate four support checks
- Stock: which exact regional model will the retailer send?
- Setup: can you install and use the required app with your phone and account?
- Features: which assistant, language and connected services are supported where you will use it?
- After-sales service: who handles a fault, repair or return, and where must the product be sent?
The Ray-Ban US FAQ’s published purchase-country list checked for this guide does not include South Africa. Ask the seller to confirm local support and import terms in writing. An imported item’s availability does not establish support for every connected feature. Official availability and warranty information.
Add delivery, any import charges, necessary adapters, lenses and return costs to your own comparison. Keep the invoice and the seller’s answers with the model details.
Fit and prescription deserve their own check
Try the frame for a realistic part of your day. Check bridge comfort, temple pressure, slipping, lens position and how the glasses sit when you look down. Compare measurements with a pair you already find comfortable; our frame-measurement guide explains the limits of those numbers.
Ask an optician about your exact prescription and the selected model. Manufacturer ranges and certified fitting options differ by model and region. For display glasses, also check the correct prescription insert and viewing fit; XREAL warns that inserts are not interchangeable across all its product families. XREAL prescription FAQ; Oakley prescription guidance.
Camera and audio: try the conditions that matter to you
Ask to see original sample clips from the exact model in daylight, indoors and while walking. Look at framing, motion, voice clarity and transfer effort. For calls, try your usual background noise. Ask how much audio people nearby can hear at your normal volume.
Meta describes open-ear audio and voice/touch controls. Open ears do not guarantee that you will notice every hazard or that conversations remain private. Treat the camera, microphones and speakers as separate features to assess. Meta feature overview.
Make charging and care part of the purchase
Check what comes in the box, how the glasses dock, and whether a cable or power adapter is supplied. Ask how you will recharge during the day and how the device behaves when the battery is low.
Ray-Ban Meta glasses are rated IPX4; the manufacturer says they are not designed for submersion or extended water exposure. Read the exact care and water-resistance instructions for your chosen model. Ray-Ban care and charging FAQ.
Recording, privacy and a second-hand purchase
Let people know before recording, respect requests to stop, and follow the rules of the venue. A visible capture light is a useful signal, but it does not replace a conversation about recording. Plan where captures will be transferred, backed up and deleted.
For a used pair, ask for proof of purchase, a reset and a demonstration that you can pair it with your own account. Ray-Ban explains that a factory reset removes captures and the previous account association. Account and reset instructions.
Your before-you-pay checklist
- Exact model, generation, size and lens option recorded.
- Your main task is supported by the chosen device.
- Phone, app, account and regional feature support confirmed.
- Fit tried; prescription solution confirmed where needed.
- Realistic charging routine and required accessories identified.
- Warranty, repair route and return terms recorded.
- Recording and capture-management preferences understood.
If an important answer is missing, save the listing and ask the seller before buying. Choose the model whose confirmed features match your routine.
